The 30 years of his account, from the later 17th century to the early 18th, represents an era before the colonial period had properly begun, though scholars now may argue about some specific places. Therefore, say Corield (history and international studies, Geelong Grammar School) and Morson, who when with the British Army visited or lived in most of the places it mentions, it represents a primary source for students of Asian history at that time.
