We became fast friends. Mareks fine arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts was impressive enough, and after seeing some of his printed pieces, I could see that his transition from fine art to photography was very natural. He worked for Rolling Stone and later become chief photographer for Artbeat magazine. He also showed me these incredible images from the Haight-Ashbury District of San Francisco mixed in with famous faces from the seventies. I was totally blown away! His strong frame compositions and distinctive black & white style harkened back to Rembrandts lighting and the images created by Irving Penn.

We talked a little. He told me very briefly about his life as an art director and award winning photographer. Needless to say Marek became a welcomed member of our faculty and for seven years molded the visions of hundreds of our students in Photojournalism and Composition classes. Marek has had several photo exhibitions in the United States, Canada & Europe- but it is his unique street photography, artistic eye for composition and ability to capture the decisive moment that makes images in this book bold. He chronicles a riot of the emerging counter-culture of the late sixties & seventies.

While being images of the past, all of these moments are the basis for many of the stylistic queues that drive our current visual culture- specially seen through the eyes of an artist born outside the United States. This collection of candid images are a true time machine, with every frame lush with the sharpened view of a time and place that came together in a flash- all kept alive and captured forever on film by Marek Majewski.
