The framework for this curriculum focuses on strengthening the communication skills of adult English language learners (ELLs) while preparing them for their roles as employee/employers, students, parents, and consumers.

With a focus on the learning process, prior experiences, and personal goals of adults, this effective, yet versatile curriculum provides authentic activities that can be tailored to meet individual student needs.Pre-professional and experienced k-12 teachers looking for an adventurous career teaching adult ESOL throughout the world will find ESL Curriculum for Adult Learners a valuable resource. The host of ideas, activities, sample daily living themes and topics will help them plan instruction for various levels of English language proficiency.

The characteristics of students that introduce each of the six levels of English language proficiency contained in this guide provide practitioners a point of reference in which to plan instruction.Teacher trainers will benefit using ESL Curriculum for Adult Learners in their courses as a supplement to the materials already used to teach ELLs at the k-12 levels. It is often that we, as teacher trainers, forget to include adult ELL instruction when teaching pre-professional educators.

Due to the fact that the learning processes of adults are inherently different than that of students, this guide will provide a nice compliment to any ESL teacher-training course. Finally, as mentioned in chapters one and two of the ESL Curriculum for Adult Learners, there is a growing need for adult ESL programs throughout the United States.

Guidelines to establishing a program are included which will help guide curriculum writers and administrators interested in establishing an adult ESL program. Although initially developed for a full-time ESOL program, practitioners can implement this curriculum into a part-time program as well. I hope you will find this curriculum guide useful as you plan and implement a quality program for adult ELLs.ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Kimberly Cardimona, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) and coordinator of the International Speech and Language Center in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.Prior to her arrival at Bloomsburg University, Dr.
